Recipe scaler and kitchen unit converter

Quick answer: To scale a recipe, multiply every ingredient by new servings divided by original servings. Paste your ingredient list below and pick the new serving count; amounts update instantly and you can switch to metric. Baking times and pan sizes don't scale the same way, so check doneness early.

Scale a recipe

Scaled ×1.5

Volume-to-metric conversions use 1 US cup = 236.6 ml, 1 tbsp = 14.8 ml, 1 tsp = 4.93 ml, 1 oz = 28.35 g and 1 lb = 453.6 g (NIST conversion tables). Cups of flour, sugar and other dry foods weigh different amounts, so we convert volume to ml, not grams.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I scale a recipe up or down?

Divide the servings you want by the servings the recipe makes, then multiply each ingredient by that number. For example, going from 4 to 6 servings is a factor of 1.5.

Do cooking times change when I double a recipe?

Often only a little. Stovetop dishes may need a few extra minutes to come to a simmer, and baked goods depend on pan size, so check for doneness early rather than doubling the time.

Why doesn't the converter turn cups of flour into grams?

A cup is a volume. A cup of flour, sugar or oats each weighs a different amount, so an accurate gram figure needs the specific food. Use the package or a kitchen scale for weights.

How many tablespoons are in a cup?

There are 16 tablespoons in a US cup and 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon.
